Get the Most Out of Your Tank!
The Holidays are upon us! Naturally, everyone wants to be with family during the holidays, and that means traveling. With the high price of gasoline, traveling for the Holidays can be very costly. We are here to help you though! Here is a tip, from fueleconomy.gov, to optimize the number of miles you get out of each tank:
Keep your engine properly tuned.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.
Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.
Fuel Economy Benefit: 4%
Equivalent Gasoline Savings: Approx. $0.14/gallon
Make sure that your car is in tip-top shape for your Holiday travel plans, and schedule a service appointment with Rancho Santa Margarita Honda today!

Be Ready for any Situation.
Driving can be dangerous at times and you want to be prepared for what the road may throw at you. Emergency road side kits are one of the most important things you can have in your car. They can help with flat tires, jumping your car and when you're stranded on the side of the road.
Here's a list of things to have in your Emergency Kit.
Sanitation
- Toilet paper. Keep a 4-pack handy; remove the cardboard tubes and flatten.
- Hand sanitizer. Store in a quart-size zip-top bag to avoid leakage.
- Toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss. Travel sizes make these easier to pack. Pack a set for each member in a zip-top bag labeled with each person’s name.
- Plastic tablecloth. This can cover questionable surfaces when you’re ready for a meal or a diaper change.
- Trash bags. These are good for lining an emergency potty, which could be a 5-gallon bucket or a toddler potty.
- Baby wipes.
- Bar of soap. Store in a zip-top bag or soap box.
- Disinfecting wipes.
- Feminine protection.
- Small box of tissues.
- Zip-top bags in different sizes. These come in handy for holding dirty laundry, dirty diapers or trash, and can even be used to hold water.
Sustenance
- Energy bars. Choose high-calorie options; they’re lightweight but provide the calories you’ll need in a small dose.
- Almonds.
- V-8 juice.
- Sport drink, premade or a mix.
- Peanut or other nut butters in foil packets.
- Jerky.
- Dried fruit.
- Applesauce/fruit cups.
- Hearty, whole wheat crackers.
- Hard candies.
- Tuna packs.
- Dry cereal.
- Jam/jelly cups.
- Trail mix. Make sure there’s no chocolate (which would melt in high temperatures).
- Shelled sunflower seeds.
Survival
- Water. A case of water bottles or cleaned 2-liter soda bottles, refilled with tap water, and tightly capped. These bottles can be reused.
- Water filter. I like the Life-Straw or PurifiCup, which are both lightweight and highly portable.
- LED flashlights and/or headlamps.
- Rain ponchos.
- Emergency radio. Choose a model that is both solar- and battery-powered.
- Heavy-duty trash bags.
- Reflective emergency blanket/sleeping bag.
- Duct tape. (There’s always a use for duct tape.)
- Fleece blankets. I roll these up and store them under the back seat for easiest access. They can be used as a window shade, ground cover, changing pad and in so many other ways.
- Tarp.
- Paracord. 50 yards, or more. Paracord is a lightweight nylon, general purpose utility rope.
- Multi-purpose knife.
- Extra batteries. For everything in your kit that requires a battery.
- Hand/foot warmers.
- Work gloves.
- Small shovel.
- Fire-starters, such as waterproof matches, flint or a Blast Match, which shoots sparks with three times the heat of a standard match.
- Multi-tool.
- Binoculars.
- Light sticks. These are great to keep the kids entertained but also helpful for keeping track of them after dark.
- Maps.
- High quality first-aid kit.
- Bandannas.
- Small pair of scissors.
- Collapsible nylon bag or small backpack. If you ever have to leave your vehicle for safer ground, this will enable you to take the most essential items with you.
- Shoelaces.
- Walking shoes for each member of the family. You’ll give thanks for having sturdy, comfortable shoes stashed in the car if you ever have to hoof it to safety.
- Floppy cotton hat.
- Sunblock.
- Medications. Make sure you only pack those that aren’t temperature-sensitive.
- Face mask. Even a simple dust mask comes in handy around a forest fire or high level of smog.
- Bug repellent.
- Moleskin.
- Survival and first aid manuals.
Security
- Whistle.
- Cash, coins. Power outages also take out ATM machines. Having cash for gas, a restaurant meal or hotel room might put you ahead of those who only have a debit or credit card.
- Disposable camera. This could be very helpful in documenting a car accident, license plates, injuries or storm damage.
- Pepper spray. This is good bear spray if your travels take you through bear country.
- Emergency phone numbers on a laminated card.
Sanity
- Deck of cards.
- Foam ear plugs.
- Books on CD, paperbacks.
- Inspirational or motivational book.
- Small journal/pen or pencil.
- Lip balm.
- Battery-powered fan.
Visit Rancho Santa Margarita Honda.

SUV of the Future.
An all-new Honda concept vehicle made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show 2013 (NAIAS) in Detroit. The concept hints at a dynamic, fuel-efficient small SUV with aspirational styling and next-generation connectivity. Its clean character lines are complemented by hidden rear door handles, giving the SUV a coupe-like presence.
The new concept is shorter than the CR-V, making it an ideal size for both city streets and mountain roads. It's poised to join the Honda light-truck lineup, with the Honda-original center-tank layout and a configurable Magic Seat® for a host of cargo and passenger options.
This vehicle is slated to launch in Japan later this year, with expansion to the U.S. market in 2014. Be sure to sign up for our emails to receive the latest information and updates.

Top 10 Car Maintenance Mistakes.
Compared to the family trucksters of a generation ago, modern cars require about as much maintenance as a toaster. This is a real liberation from the oil, lube and tune merry-go-round that ruled not so long ago.
Curiously, many people haven't adjusted their thinking to keep pace with new car maintenance schedules. The preoccupied still run their daily drivers without service until the dash warning lights burn out, while over-achievers fret about running synthetic oil more than 2,500 miles without a change.
Although maintenance intervals are now more widely spaced, even the newest cars require scheduled service to live long, productive lives. Whether yours is the latest model or you paid it off years ago, the trick is giving your car the maintenance it was designed to receive.
Surprisingly, the answer to what maintenance is required is hiding no farther away than the glove box. Every car is supplied with a maintenance schedule — in the owner's manual or in a separate maintenance log book — that details that vehicle's needs. A few minutes assimilating these requirements will help you avoid the following common car-maintenance pitfalls.
Proper Tire Inflation and Rotation
Tires leak naturally and need the occasional check. Figuratively speaking, underinflated tires suck up gasoline. Under- or overinflated tires wear out sooner, and deliver the same emergency maneuver handling as marshmallows. You probably aren't going to check tire pressures monthly, but how about twice a year?
Furthermore, front and rear tires wear differently and should be rotated to even that wear. Your owner's manual will have a recommendation on both pressure and rotation periods.
Wiper Tales
Here's a news flash: It's much easier to avoid hitting things you can see. Simple as it is, that's the concept behind replacing your windshield wipers before they fossilize into noisy uselessness.
Fall is the ideal wiper replacement time: after the blade-baking summer and before the fall and winter nastiness. Depending on location, wiper replacement may be an annual affair in the Southwest to a biannual chore in northern climes.
Tune-Up Anachronism
There are no more "tune-ups." Valves no longer need adjusting, ignition timing is computer controlled and there are no carburetors to fiddle with. About all that's left of the old tune-up drill are the spark plugs. These are often good for 100,000 miles, so don't change parts just to change parts. Instead, save up for those big 60,000- and 120,000-mile services when the timing belt, spark plug wires and coolant are due for replacement.
Octane Overdose
"If some is good, more is better" thinking does not apply to octane. Here the rule is to supply whatever octane the engine is rated for and call it done. Higher-than-required octane does not yield more power or mileage, only oil company profits.
Some engines are rated for premium 91 octane fuel but can burn 87 octane regular, thanks to the magic of knock sensors. In that case, run regular gas if puttering around surface streets, and premium fuel if full-throttle driving is part of your daily repertoire.
Oil Change Timing
Oil changes every 3,000 miles used to be required jobs, just like cleaning the accumulated fuzz from record player needles or defrosting freezers. Today, advances in engine design and lubricants make oil changes something to be done when the schedule calls for it, not when granddad says it's time. Some cars call for 5,000-mile change intervals, some up to 15,000-mile stints. Others have a variable timer. Follow the schedule and use the oil called for by the manufacturer.
Tired Tires
Tires wear out, but they also time out. The tire industry says tires are toast after five years, but they're selling tires. It all depends on heat, sunlight and ozone conditions. There's little argument from any pundits that after seven years those black donuts are dried and better off holding down a farmer's tarp than carrying your family around. If you're not sure how old your tires are, a tire shop can read the date code stamped into the sidewall.
Dirty Air Filter
Semi-clogged air filters hurt fuel economy for the same reason you don't like to run with a potato in your mouth. The question is, when is your filter dirty? Under a Norman Rockwell schedule of small-town errand running and church duty, an air filter might not see much grit. But grimy city surface streets or just looking at a dirt road on a map are often enough to overwhelm air filters. This one is about conditions. If you go near dirt, the air filter may need changing twice as often as the schedule calls for.
Ignoring Your Brakes
Note to the Wandering Unconscious: If you notice anything different about your brakes — sound, feel or response — they are telling you to visit a mechanic. Now.
Tighten Your Gas Cap
Is the Check Engine light on? Then make sure the gas cap is on tightly before calling the dealer. No joke, this is one of the most common ways of setting off your car's diagnostic system, since a loose gas cap defeats the fuel system's venting arrangement.
The Garage Is for Parking
Let's review. Your house is your most valuable investment. Your car is likely your second most valuable investment. If you're paying all that money, then why are you storing empty cardboard boxes, broken skateboards and plastic holiday wreaths in the garage? Pitch that junk and get the car in the garage!

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presents 2013 Honda Cup to Keilani Ricketts of the University of Oklahoma
Keilani Ricketts, who uniquely dominated collegiate softball with her pitching and hitting, is the 2013 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and recipient of The Honda Cup. Ricketts was presented the prestigious award yesterday in a live telecast on ESPNU from USC's Galen Center Founders Club in downtown Los Angeles.
"Keilani is a great person to represent collegiate women's sports, and softball in particular as it looks to re-enter the Olympic program. When we showcase the nation's best of the best in collegiate athletics live on ESPNU, we are delighted to honor an athlete like Keilani," said Jean Lenti Ponsetto, CWSA Chairwoman of the Board and Athletics Director at DePaul University. "Keilani is a special athlete, and one who is very deserving of the 2013 Honda Cup."
Ricketts was a finalist for the Honda Cup in 2012, and is a two-time winner of the Honda Sports Award for softball. The University of Oklahoma senior was selected by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 37th year, from a trio of finalists that included basketball's Elena Delle Donne of the University of Delaware, the 2012 Honda Inspiration Award recipient; and LSU sprinter Kimberlyn Duncan. Also honored were the top Division II athlete, Kari Daugherty of Ashland University, another two-time honoree, and Division III's Allyson Fournier, a softball player at Tufts University.
"I would like to thank Honda for sponsoring and for the CWSA to appreciate us as collegiate athletes," said Ricketts. "We really do feel appreciated. I've had a blast so far. Congratulations to all of the recipients just because all of them have had amazing seasons. It's awesome to be able to experience this with them. My teammates helped me stay determined. Winning the Honda Cup has been great to represent my school and my state. I wouldn't be here without the people of Oklahoma. They have motivated me to be prideful to use softball to represent them well."
Ricketts led her No 1-ranked Oklahoma team both from the circle and at the plate, taking the Sooners to their second straight Women's College World Series and the 2013 NCAA title. With her unique skill set as a pitcher and hitter, she has been called "her sport's Babe Ruth," and is looked to as the future face of softball. She has likened comparisons to softball legend Lisa Fernandez, a former Honda Cup winner from UCLA. After pitching a career high 12 innings and bringing her team to a game one win in its best-of-three final series against Tennessee, Ricketts took the night off from the circle in game two, serving as the designated player and hitting a home run with 4 RBIs to help garner the title for the Sooners. Early in the WCWS, to help get her team to the final series, she threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 against Michigan.
A dominating presence at 6-foot-2, she was 35-1 on the season, starting all 56 games (36 at pitcher and 20 at DP), and earned 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors. Ricketts ranked No. 8 in the nation in ERA (1.23) and No. 6 in strikeouts (350). She has played for the U.S. National team and came to Oklahoma as the youngest of four athletic children in San Jose, California. Her older sister, Samantha, played for Patty Gasso at Oklahoma before Keilani and it was Samantha who first noticed her 6-foot 13-year old sister could be a special talent. At sports powerhouse high school Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Ricketts played varsity basketball as a freshman and varsity softball not until her sophomore year, when she quickly garnered national attention. She ended her senior prep season 22-0, leading her school to the 2009 national softball championship.
Ricketts, Duncan and Delle Donne emerged as the CWSA's "Best of the Best" on the Road to the 2013 Honda Cup that included Honda Sports Award Winners in 12-NCAA sanctioned sports. The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has provided more than $2.7 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
Ricketts' fellow 2013 Honda Cup winners were also honored this evening, including Iowa State's Betsy Saina (cross country), Princeton's Katie Reinprecht (field hockey), North Carolina's Crystal Dunn (soccer), Oregon's Alaina Bergsma (volleyball), Georgia's Allison Schmitt (swimming & diving), Delle Donne, Florida's Bridget Sloan (gymnastics), USC's Annie Park (golf), North Carolina's Kara Cannizzaro (lacrosse), Stanford's Nicole Gibbs (tennis), and Duncan. The Honda Cup finalists were joined by the 2013 Honda Inspiration Winner, Purdue's Andrea "Drey" Mingo, Daugherty, and Fournier.
Previous Honda Cup winners include Brittney Griner, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mia Hamm, Deitre Collins-Parker, Lisa Fernandez, Misty May-Treanor, Courtney Kupets, Maya Moore, and Candace Parker. Meyers Drysdale, Fernandez and Collins were among the former winners in attendance at the live ESPN U show.

HPD Ready for Le Mans.
Manufacturer Fielding ARX-Hondas in LMP1, LMP2
06/18/2013
-
SANTA CLARITA, Calif.
Honda Performance Development, along with partner teams Strakka
Racing and Level 5 Motorsports, returns to the Circuit de la Sarthe this
week as the racing division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., seeks to
extend its run of class victories and podium finishes at the 24 Hours
of Le Mans.
Since first appearing at Le Mans in 2010, HPD and its Honda-powered ARX prototypes have won the LMP2 category twice - in 2010 and again in 2012 - and finished on the class podium in all three years.
In this year's race, reigning American Le Mans Series LMP2 champion Level 5 Motorsports will defend HPD's LMP2 crown at Le Mans. A strong driver lineup including Ryan Briscoe, Marino Franchitti and Scott Tucker will share driving duties aboard Level 5's HPD ARX-03b, powered by the production-based HR28TT twin-turbo V6 engine found in the 2013 Acura RLX and MDX.
In LMP1, Strakka Racing will continue its battle for privateer honors with drivers Jonny Kane, Nick Leventis and Danny Watts against the two-car effort from Rebellion Racing, in addition to full-factory efforts from Audi and Toyota. British-based Strakka, which moved up to LMP1 in the World Endurance Championship in 2012, led HPD to victory in LMP2 at Le Mans in 2010, and this year will field an HPD ARX-03c, updated for 2013 and again powered by the race-proven Honda LM-V8 naturally aspirated engine.
In HPD's first attempt at Le Mans, Strakka won the category and finished fifth overall, the highest-ever finishing position for an LMP2 entry. Strakka finished six laps ahead of its nearest competitor, and set a new record for laps and miles completed by an LMP2 entry, joining the elite "5,000-kilometer club" in the process.
"Returning to Le Mans, with both LMP1 and LMP2 programs, is an enormous challenge for our engineers and associates," said Steve Eriksen, vice president and COO of HPD. "We understand the challenge for us in LMP1: Supplying a very strong, but private team in Strakka Racing with our improved ARX-03c, against the might of full factory efforts from Audi and Toyota. But Honda and HPD have never been afraid to take on strong competition. As Mr. Honda said, ‘the best place to learn is at the highest level'. In endurance racing, there is no higher level than LMP1.
"In LMP2, we expect that the proven design of the ARX-03b chassis and HR28TT turbocharged V6 engine - plus the development and engineering expertise of HPD and its technical partners - will provide Level 5 Motorsports with the tools it needs to successfully defend our 2012 class victory. It will be an exciting race."
One of the most successful prototype designs in recent years, intended for use by independent teams, the HPD ARX series has posted 55 victories and six endurance-racing championships since its introduction - and debut LMP2 victory - at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2007. The most recent wins for the ARX came in last month's American Le Mans Series event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, where Muscle Milk Pickett Racing won overall and LMP1 in an ARX-03c, while Level 5 claimed the LMP2 class with an ARX-03b.
The landmark 50th win for the ARX design came last year at the ALMS season-ending Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, again scored by Level 5 Motorsports. HPD has also been the most successful competitor in the LMP Green X Challenge, with 19 Green X Challenge awards under the HPD and Acura banners since the program recognizing "clean, fast and efficient" performance originated in 2006.
Honda Performance Development (HPD) is the Honda racing company within North America. Located in Santa Clarita, Calif., HPD is the technical operations center for high-performance Honda racing cars and engines. The company is marking its 20th anniversary in 2013.
As one of three engine suppliers to the IZOD IndyCar Series, Honda has scored 199 race victories in both CART and IZOD IndyCar Series competition since 1994.
HPD takes part in both the American Le Mans Series - where the company swept all manufacturer, engine, team and driver awards in the 2012 ALMS LMP1 and LMP2 categories - and the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning the inaugural LMP2 World Championship in 2012 along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
HPD offers a variety of race engines for track applications from prototype sports cars to karting; and showcases "fun-to-drive" products for professional, amateur and entry-level racers.
Since first appearing at Le Mans in 2010, HPD and its Honda-powered ARX prototypes have won the LMP2 category twice - in 2010 and again in 2012 - and finished on the class podium in all three years.

HPD has also been the most successful competitor in the LMP Green X Challenge, with 19 Green X Challenge awards under the HPD and Acura banners since the program recognizing "clean, fast and efficient" performance originated in 2006.

Steve, thank you for this pleasant review!
"Very happy with my experience here. The sales department was very
aggressive in their pricing to earn my business. Once on the lot they
stood by everything the had committed to via email. No bait and switch,
no games."- Steve

Hello fans! Here is your weekly maintenance tip.
Clean dash gauges carefully:
Use a soft damp cloth to lightly wipe dust from the clear plastic
lenses on your dashboard. Too much pressure will scratch them. Too many
scratches can make it difficult to read your gauges under certain
lighting conditions.
