The Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presents 2013 Honda Cup to Keilani Ricketts of the University of Oklahoma

Keilani Ricketts, who uniquely dominated collegiate softball with her pitching and hitting, is the 2013 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and recipient of The Honda Cup. Ricketts was presented the prestigious award yesterday in a live telecast on ESPNU from USC's Galen Center Founders Club in downtown Los Angeles.
"Keilani is a great person to represent collegiate women's sports, and softball in particular as it looks to re-enter the Olympic program. When we showcase the nation's best of the best in collegiate athletics live on ESPNU, we are delighted to honor an athlete like Keilani," said Jean Lenti Ponsetto, CWSA Chairwoman of the Board and Athletics Director at DePaul University. "Keilani is a special athlete, and one who is very deserving of the 2013 Honda Cup."
Ricketts was a finalist for the Honda Cup in 2012, and is a two-time winner of the Honda Sports Award for softball.  The University of Oklahoma senior was selected by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 37th year, from a trio of finalists that included basketball's Elena Delle Donne of the University of Delaware, the 2012 Honda Inspiration Award recipient; and LSU sprinter Kimberlyn Duncan.  Also honored were the top Division II athlete, Kari Daugherty of Ashland University, another two-time honoree, and Division III's Allyson Fournier, a softball player at Tufts University.
"I would like to thank Honda for sponsoring and for the CWSA to appreciate us as collegiate athletes," said Ricketts. "We really do feel appreciated. I've had a blast so far. Congratulations to all of the recipients just because all of them have had amazing seasons. It's awesome to be able to experience this with them. My teammates helped me stay determined. Winning the Honda Cup has been great to represent my school and my state. I wouldn't be here without the people of Oklahoma. They have motivated me to be prideful to use softball to represent them well."
Ricketts led her No 1-ranked Oklahoma team both from the circle and at the plate, taking the Sooners to their second straight Women's College World Series and the 2013 NCAA title.  With her unique skill set as a pitcher and hitter, she has been called "her sport's Babe Ruth," and is looked to as the future face of softball. She has likened comparisons to softball legend Lisa Fernandez, a former Honda Cup winner from UCLA. After pitching a career high 12 innings and bringing her team to a game one win in its best-of-three final series against Tennessee, Ricketts took the night off from the circle in game two, serving as the designated player and hitting a home run with 4 RBIs to help garner the title for the Sooners. Early in the WCWS, to help get her team to the final series, she threw a no-hitter and struck out 12 against Michigan.
A dominating presence at 6-foot-2, she was 35-1 on the season, starting all 56 games (36 at pitcher and 20 at DP), and earned 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year honors. Ricketts ranked No. 8 in the nation in ERA (1.23) and No. 6 in strikeouts (350). She has played for the U.S. National team and came to Oklahoma as the youngest of four athletic children in San Jose, California. Her older sister, Samantha, played for Patty Gasso at Oklahoma before Keilani and it was Samantha who first noticed her 6-foot 13-year old sister could be a special talent. At sports powerhouse high school Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Ricketts played varsity basketball as a freshman and varsity softball not until her sophomore year, when she quickly garnered national attention. She ended her senior prep season 22-0, leading her school to the 2009 national softball championship.
Ricketts, Duncan and Delle Donne emerged as the CWSA's "Best of the Best" on the Road to the 2013 Honda Cup that included Honda Sports Award Winners in 12-NCAA sanctioned sports. The Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. has provided more than $2.7 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.
Ricketts' fellow 2013 Honda Cup winners were also honored this evening, including Iowa State's Betsy Saina (cross country), Princeton's Katie Reinprecht (field hockey), North Carolina's Crystal Dunn (soccer), Oregon's Alaina Bergsma (volleyball), Georgia's Allison Schmitt (swimming & diving), Delle Donne, Florida's Bridget Sloan (gymnastics), USC's Annie Park (golf), North Carolina's Kara Cannizzaro (lacrosse), Stanford's Nicole Gibbs (tennis), and Duncan.  The Honda Cup finalists were joined by the 2013 Honda Inspiration Winner, Purdue's Andrea "Drey" Mingo, Daugherty, and Fournier.
Previous Honda Cup winners include Brittney Griner, Ann Meyers Drysdale, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mia Hamm, Deitre Collins-Parker, Lisa Fernandez, Misty May-Treanor, Courtney Kupets, Maya Moore, and Candace Parker. Meyers Drysdale, Fernandez and Collins were among the former winners in attendance at the live ESPN U show.

HPD Ready for Le Mans.

Manufacturer Fielding ARX-Hondas in LMP1, LMP2

06/18/2013 - SANTA CLARITA, Calif. Honda Performance Development, along with partner teams Strakka Racing and Level 5 Motorsports, returns to the Circuit de la Sarthe this week as the racing division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., seeks to extend its run of class victories and podium finishes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Since first appearing at Le Mans in 2010, HPD and its Honda-powered ARX prototypes have won the LMP2 category twice - in 2010 and again in 2012 - and finished on the class podium in all three years.
In this year's race, reigning American Le Mans Series LMP2 champion Level 5 Motorsports will defend HPD's LMP2 crown at Le Mans. A strong driver lineup including Ryan Briscoe, Marino Franchitti and Scott Tucker will share driving duties aboard Level 5's HPD ARX-03b, powered by the production-based HR28TT twin-turbo V6 engine found in the 2013 Acura RLX and MDX.
In LMP1, Strakka Racing will continue its battle for privateer honors with drivers Jonny Kane, Nick Leventis and Danny Watts against the two-car effort from Rebellion Racing, in addition to full-factory efforts from Audi and Toyota.  British-based Strakka, which moved up to LMP1 in the World Endurance Championship in 2012, led HPD to victory in LMP2 at Le Mans in 2010, and this year will field an HPD ARX-03c, updated for 2013 and again powered by the race-proven Honda LM-V8 naturally aspirated engine.
In HPD's first attempt at Le Mans, Strakka won the category and finished fifth overall, the highest-ever finishing position for an LMP2 entry.  Strakka finished six laps ahead of its nearest competitor, and set a new record for laps and miles completed by an LMP2 entry, joining the elite "5,000-kilometer club" in the process.
"Returning to Le Mans, with both LMP1 and LMP2 programs, is an enormous challenge for our engineers and associates," said Steve Eriksen, vice president and COO of HPD. "We understand the challenge for us in LMP1: Supplying a very strong, but private team in Strakka Racing with our improved ARX-03c, against the might of full factory efforts from Audi and Toyota.  But Honda and HPD have never been afraid to take on strong competition.  As Mr. Honda said, ‘the best place to learn is at the highest level'.  In endurance racing, there is no higher level than LMP1.
"In LMP2, we expect that the proven design of the ARX-03b chassis and HR28TT turbocharged V6 engine - plus the development and engineering expertise of HPD and its technical partners - will provide Level 5 Motorsports with the tools it needs to successfully defend our 2012 class victory.  It will be an exciting race."
One of the most successful prototype designs in recent years, intended for use by independent teams, the HPD ARX series has posted 55 victories and six endurance-racing championships since its introduction - and debut LMP2 victory - at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2007.  The most recent wins for the ARX came in last month's American Le Mans Series event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California, where Muscle Milk Pickett Racing won overall and LMP1 in an ARX-03c, while Level 5 claimed the LMP2 class with an ARX-03b.
The landmark 50th win for the ARX design came last year at the ALMS season-ending Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, again scored by Level 5 Motorsports.  HPD has also been the most successful competitor in the LMP Green X Challenge, with 19 Green X Challenge awards under the HPD and Acura banners since the program recognizing "clean, fast and efficient" performance originated in 2006.
Honda Performance Development (HPD) is the Honda racing company within North America.  Located in Santa Clarita, Calif., HPD is the technical operations center for high-performance Honda racing cars and engines. The company is marking its 20th anniversary in 2013.
As one of three engine suppliers to the IZOD IndyCar Series, Honda has scored 199 race victories in both CART and IZOD IndyCar Series competition since 1994.
HPD takes part in both the American Le Mans Series - where the company swept all manufacturer, engine, team and driver awards in the 2012 ALMS LMP1 and LMP2 categories - and the FIA World Endurance Championship, winning the inaugural LMP2 World Championship in 2012 along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
HPD offers a variety of race engines for track applications from prototype sports cars to karting; and showcases "fun-to-drive" products for professional, amateur and entry-level racers.
